The Jane Austen Society of North America (JASNA) of New Mexico, like the national organization, is dedicated to the enjoyment of Jane Austen and her writing. This is an exciting time as we look back 200 years to the publication of Jane Austen’s six novels, published from 1811-1817, and mourn her untimely death in 1817. Jane’s fame has continued to grow with a multitude of authors and movies that explore her writing and her life during the Georgian and Regency eras in England.
Please join us in our quarterly gatherings as we continue to enjoy Jane's enduring genius! You can also join our Facebook page to exchange thoughts and insights!
Dal Jensen's lovely toast for our Jane Austen 250th Birthday Celebration
December 16th in 1775 was a bitter cold day in Steventon, a village in Hampshire, when Jane Austen was born. One day after her birth, her father, the village’s pastor, wrote
…….We now have another girl, a present plaything for her sister Cassy and a future companion. She is to be Jenny…”
It is a truth, universally acknowledged, that December is the time to celebrate Jane’s Birthday and so, today, we celebrate!
Soon our Jane will be 250 years young, but she doesn’t show her age at all! We send our very best wishes and love to the Hampshire girl who stubbornly wanted to live on her pen, be free and independent… who preferred writing to a married life, who dreamt and wrote beautiful love stories, but never achieved one of her own.
So to Jane, we raise a glass of birthday cheer - long may her stories continue to flourish – and let’s do it again next year!!
